Topic : Counter Steering

Counter steering is always used to initiate a turn.

If you have never heard of counter steering you have a very serious problem! You will NEVER be able to take a corner safely and properly until you know how to counter steer.  To negotiate a turn successfully, the combined centre of mass of the rider and bike must first be leaned into the direction of the turn, and steering briefly in the opposite direction causes this to happen.

Bottom line (we know this sounds crazy, but this is how it works):
  • To initiate a left corner push the left side of the handlebar forward. (steer briefly right)
  • To initiate a right corner push the right side of the handlebar forward. (steer briefly left)
The pushing immediately causes the bike to lean into the direction of the push.
The more lean angle you require, the more you push.
Once the lean of the bike is correct, lean your body into the direction of the lean to maintain the lean - and away you go!!
